2009 Dauphine Libere – GC Odds
The 2009 Dauphine Libere provides one of the final warm-up races prior to the Tour de France. Three very mountainous stages will see the top contenders for the Tour come to the fore. Stage 5 takes the riders up to the summit of the mighty Mont Ventoux but the days to follow pose arguably more difficult times ahead. Stage 6 includes the 30km+ tortuos climb of the spectacular Col d’Izoard while Stage 7 is brutal starting the day over the Col du Galibier, followed by the Col de la Croix de Fer and finally climbing two-thirds of the way up the Col de la Madeleine.
The bookmakers naturally have Contador as the race favourite with Valverde his closest rival. Cadel Evans will make a good showing and be there at the top of the big climbs but it’s likely he won’t want to extend himself so close to the Tour, a case of fine tuning. The question is whether Contador can temper his enthusiasm for winning or will he blow up a la Paris-Nice earlier in the year.
We await further odds before making a call.
