Just updated the Overall Classification odds for the 2009 Giro d’Italia. Much has changed in the last few days with Leipheimer and Basso pulling clear of the rest along with Menchov and Di Luca. The bookmakers still don’t think Menchov has what it takes to stand on the top step of the podium at the Giro with best odds of 6.00 (5/1) with Boylesports and Unibet. With a stage win under his belt, and an impressive one at that, Menchov could just be about to show his true form. Much will depend on the upcoming Time Trial.
Basso is a difficult rider to consider given that we haven’t seen him do a great deal other than ride team-mate Pellizotti off the main group in the early mountain stages. At best odds of 3.00 (2/1) with Sky Bet and Unibet he seems very short-priced.
Can Di Luca at best odds of 8.00 (7/1) with Stan James and Unibet really pull off the Giro win this year? We don’t think so, relentless mountains don’t suit Di Luca and he’s likely to crack sooner rather than later.
