The 2010 Dauphine Libere takes in arguably the most famous of all mountains in professional cycling – Alpe d’Huez. Sadly the field doesn’t live up to the route with Alberto Contador odds-on favourite with the bookmakers followed (not so closely) by Chris Horner. Samuel Sanchez and Denis Menchov, two riders who tend to go better later in the year at La Vuelta Espana, are third favourites both at 10.00. There is no better evidence that this year’s Dauphine is light on real Tour de France GC contenders than the fact that David Millar is sixth favourite at 21.00 (20/1).
We can’t see past a Contador victory given Menchov tends to go badly on Alpe d’Huez and Sanchez simply can’t live with his fellow countryman on the long steep hills.
