Stage 7 has to finish in a bunch sprint following 3 days of very hard racing. Petacchi was still in the main group towards the back end of Stage 6 and he might just pay for these efforts on Stage 7. Highroad-Columbia did little chasing yesterday and with their GC contenders safely in the pack they can turn their attention to getting Cavendish his first stage win of 2009 Tour of Italy.

Yesterday’s stage revealed much of who will be around come the end of this race. For stage 6 there is a 45km run in, will this be enough for any sprinters to get back onto the lead group. It’s possible but for both Cavendish and Petacchi their teams have other priorities. Columbia-Highroad will be stuck between supporting Cavendish over the climbs and keeping their overall GC contenders up at the front.

Interesting day ahead, it really looks like a day for somebody well down on GC to get in a breakaway and stay away.
